Een song over de melancholie van de herfst. Een compositie van Kurt Weill (1900-1950) met tekst van Maxwell Anderson voor de Broadway Musical Knickerbocker Holiday (1938). Met Walter Huston als Peter Stuyvesant. Van de filtersigaretten. Nederlanders welbekend. Huston was acteur en geen zanger. Hij zingtzegt de standard die speciaal voor ‘m geschreven werd. Wat ’n eer. Wat ’n muziek. Wat ’n weemoed.
De song komt ook voor in September Affair van William Dieterle met Joan Fontaine en Joseph Cotten. Het gaat over verloren liefde en verloren jaren. Terugkijken op de zomer. Terugkijken op wat geweest is. Duits talent ontmoet de Amerikaanse markt. Zoals in die jaren vaak gebeurde.

Als naschrift Sarah Vaughan in 1946 met een kwartet van fluwelen pianist Teddy Wilson. Met Charlie Ventura op tenor, Remo Palmieri op gitaar en Billy Taylor op bas. Sarah zou de song nog vaak opnemen. Onder andere met Clifford Brown in 1954. Ze wist de song te temmen.
